TRACK AND FIELD TEAM SELECTION

Athletes who wish to be considered for selection for County track and field teams will be expected to have achieved at least a Grade 3 standard in the appropriate event.

Achievement of this standard does not guarantee selection.

Please note that there are no qualification standards required to compete in the County track and Field Championships.

Details of the Inter County events will appear, when available, on this website.

Athletes and coaches who feel that they may have qualified should contact the County Secretary David Cooke somersetathletics@hotmail.co.uk

How to be selected to represent your County:

Introduction

The following attempts to set out the process by which individual athletes can be selected to represent the County.  For Eligibility, please refer to UKA Rule 9 – County Qualification.

Selection Process

The County Team Manager(s) can select athletes from all of those eligible.  Those eligible, and available, for each age group is continually changing.  Therefore, in order to identify the best athletes, the Team Managers rely on information from a number of different sources.  From this information, they rank the athletes and then check their availability for particular meetings.

County Standards

The County will set a ‘Standard’ which is at the time of writing a Grade 3 AAA standard.  Any athlete who has met this standard (in the year of competition) will be eligible for selection.

Results Sources

County Championships

The County Championships take place early in the Season.  These are an ideal time to compete and make your mark as a potential athlete for the County Team.  The Team Managers are usually present and have ready access to the results.

Clubs

Clubs are usually keen to promote their athletes as candidates for the County Team.  Coaches and Team Managers know of their performance in previous years and their current ability/potential.  Where possible, this will be supported by updates to the County Team Manager of the athletes current performances.

Schools

The Schools AA is represented at the County Committee meetings and there is generally a good liaison regarding the top performers in School competitions.  However, unlike the Clubs, individual schools may not be pro-active in promoting athletes as candidates for the County Association Team.

Results Services

Athletics Weekly publish the results of the various League meetings.  Unfortunately, it is not obvious if an athlete is eligible for the County.

Individuals

If you feel that you should be considered as a candidate for the County Team,  then you should contact the County Team Manager and discuss it with him/her.  Support yourself with information on your Personal Best and Seasons Best performances.  Provide them with contact details.
